TIRUCHI: Tirunelveli won a penalty shootout 3-1 against Thanjavur to book a place in the quarterfinal of the State youth football championship for the A.G. Subbaraman Trophy here on Monday. Both the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of the regulation time. Thanjavur dominated the proceedings in the first half and went 2-0 up, thanks to goals by Rajarajan and Rajesh. But Tirunelveli fought back hard and reduced the margin minutes before the half time through Thangaraj. Tirunelveli players kept attacking in the second half and Joel Raj equalised in the 57th minute. The draw forced the match to be decided in a shootout. Ganeshlingam scalps fiveGaneshlingam scalped five wickets as Tiruvallur scored a thumping 10-wicket win over Dindigul in the semifinals of the ICL Mahaveer Chand Memorial Trophy inter-district under-14 tournament in Tirunelveli on Monday. Tiruvallur will meet Coimbatore in the final. The scores: Semifinals: Dindigul 47 in 26.5 overs (Ganeshlingam five for six) lost to Tiruvallur 48 for no loss in 8.5 overs. Kancheepuram 102 for nine in 30 overs (Vishal 34, Adithya four for 20) lost to Coimbatore 103 for three in 25.1 overs (Abhinav 56 not out). Chennai boys triumphChennai and Kancheepuram won the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the State volleyball championship (senior) at Koradachery.
