Government working on State-specific nano identity cards

BANGALORE: The State Government is considering State-specific identity cards using nanotechnology, which will help police in monitoring the movement of people on a real time basis, said Director-General and Inspector-General of Police R. Sri Kumar.

To a question on the steps to keep tabs on the movement of a large number of people coming to the city, Mr. Sri Kumar said the nano tag to the identity card will help in web-enabled tracking of movement of people across States.

“The State Government is concerned about it. Work is on to prepare a State-centric identity card. We had planned to try it during the recent by-elections but could not do it,” Mr. Sri Kumar said.

Mr. Sri Kumar was participating in a programme organised by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce here on Monday.

Mr. Sri Kumar said the police were looking forward for participation of private companies in the All India Police Duty Meet and make presentations on security solutions.

Companies can showcase security gadgets and solutions at “Secure 2.0”, an exhibition that will be held as a part of the weeklong programme starting from January 3. “Experts will see it and give certification. A security audit will be done and the solutions will be considered,” he said.

Mr. Sri Kumar called upon all the telecom service providers to make available across their network emergency telephone numbers such as 100 for police, 101 for fire and 108 for health. On the question about security at HAL airport, Mr. Sri Kumar said a request had been made expressing the need for security personnel.

“I cannot provide personnel overnight. Private security agencies can come forward to provide men for such organisations,” he said.
