Tiruchi enters quarterfinals

TIRUCHI: Tiruchi trounced Vellore 4-0 and breezed into the quarterfinals of the State youth football championship for the A.G. Subbaraman Trophy here on Tuesday.

The host went into the attack mode right from the start and made dangerous forays into the rival half. But the Vellore defenders managed to ward off the threats. Midway through the first half, Vellore surprised the opposition defence with two lovely moves.

Ashok Kumar put the host ahead in the 26th minute, thanks to an excellent pass from Mohammed Habib. From then on, Tiruchi grew in confidence and started applying more pressure on the rival defence.

Hari Shanmugasundaram increased the lead in the 61st minute, while Devarajan struck a brace in the latter part of the second half to ensure his team’s place in the last eight stage.

Other results: First round: Cuddalore 1 (R. Sathish) bt Nilgiris 0; Tuticorin 1 (Bradwin) bt Sivaganga 0.

Tiruvallur wins

Tiruvallur defeated Coimbatore by 47 runs to win the ICL Mahaveer Chand Memorial Trophy in the inter-district under-14 cricket tournament at Tirunelveli on Tuesday.

The scores: Final: Tiruvallur 193 for five in 40 overs (Akshay P. Roy 73, G. Vignesh 41) bt Coimbatore 146 for nine in 40 overs (Abhinav 36, Ganeshlingam four for 19).

Special awards: Man of the final: Akshay P. Roy (Tiruvallur); Best batsman: Ateek Fazal (Madurai); Best bowler: Ganeshlingam (Tiruvallur); Man of the series: Vishal (Kancheepuram); Hat-trick performer: Pradeep Kumar (Sivaganga).

Match tied

R. Venkatesh picked eight for 45 as Coimbatore Raiders Cricket Club tied its match against favourite Arumugam Cricket Club in the Canara Bank-CDCA first division league for the Pricol Trophy at the TNAU grounds in Coimbatore recently.

After bundling out Coimbatore Raiders for a paltry 84, Arumugam Cricket Club was cruising towards victory before Venkatesh came in and rocked the boat. The left-arm fast bowler picked the last eight wickets to shatter the hopes of the latter.

The scores: First division (Pricol Trophy): Coimbatore Raiders CC 84 in 29.4 overs tied with Arumugam CC 84 in 27 overs (R. Venkatesh eight for 45).

Second division (Unidriveline Trophy): TTRC 198 in 48.3 overs (Chenniappan 44, K. Ganesh 43) lost to Coimbatore Friends CC 200 for seven in 41.5 overs (Suresh 47 not out, J. Saravanan four for 44).

Third division (Servall Trophy): Senthil Srinivasan MCC 140 in 40 overs (Prakash 40, Dharmendra four for 41) lost to PSG Tech 142 for four in 27.5 overs (Dharmendra 43), Kaleeswara CC 212 for nine in 50 overs (Rajesh 43, Muthukumar four for 41) bt R.S. Puram CC 209 for nine in 50 overs (Karthick 89 not out).
