Guha opens with a win

Nagpur: Top seeds Mitrabh Guha of Bengal in boys and Bansi Prathima of Andhra in girls scored opening round wins in the National under-7 chess championship at the Agrasen Bhavan here on Wednesday.

This 11-round event is sponsored by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and will run until January 7. Those born on or after 01-01-01 are eligible to play in this event. The prize fund is Rs. 66,000 and the champion in each section will receive Rs. 10,000 plus trophy each. The winners will qualify to represent India in the World under-8 championship at Turkey.

Leading results: round one: Boys: Manish Kumar (AP) lost to Mitrabh Guha (Ben), Aaditya V. Anand (Ker) lost to Manoj Kulkarni (Mah), Shashi Agarwal (Mah) lost to Aayush Karwar (MP).

Girls: Mafruza Rarooqui (U.P.) lost to Bansi Prathima (AP), Aamna Munjal (Del) lost to S. Monika (TN), Neeti Tatiya (Mah) bt Aarushi Jhawar (Mah). — Arvind Aaron
