KOLKATA: Police stepped up security in the city on the eve of the New Year to avert any kind of untoward event and maintain law and order, said Jawed Shamim, Deputy Commissioner of police (Detective Department) I, here on Wednesday. Mr. Shamim, however, said the heightened security arrangements were not due to any terror threat. “Makeshift watch towers have been built on building roofs. Large numbers of police teams are deployed at several important road crossings and cameras have been put up at various vantage points to monitor the crowd movement,” Mr. Shamim said. The commissioner also said that eight police teams would patrol Park Street, that houses a number of hotels, restaurants and bars and is the nerve centre during New Year revelry. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
