Marine research training for students

TIRUCHI: A team of eight students and a faculty member of Bharathidasan University recently underwent marine research training in ORV (Onboard Research Vessel) Sagar Kanya Cruise – 253. They were chosen by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa.

The team led by R. Rajaram, Lecturer of Marine Science Department, and consisting of Balaji, Darvin Dhinesh, Muthukumar, Karthikeyan, Nandakumar, Pandiyan and Vinothkumar, underwent the training while on sail from Goa to Chennai.

The students learnt about deep sea sampling techniques, and biological, physical and chemical oceanographic sampling methods. They learnt about various advanced marine research instruments like echo-sounder, CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth) measuring device, sub-bottom profiler, gravity corer, and various kinds of navigation skills in high sea.

Following the training, the students are to pursue their post-graduate research work in various national-level marine research laboratories including National Institute of Oceanography, Central Electrochemical Research Institute and Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture.
