Raid in shops

MADURAI: In a series of raids conducted on several shops and establishments in Madurai city and peripheries, officials of Department of Labour found several irregularities and have initiated legal action.

Following instructions from the Commissioner of Labour, Chennai, the officials led by Joint Commissioner P. Jayasingan took stock of a number of shops and establishments.

Teams comprising Labour Inspectors, Deputy Inspectors and Assistant Inspectors were formed which conducted checks on the weights and balances used in shops, hotels near hospitals and railway stations and at automobile dealers showrooms.

According to a press release, during the raids conducted in as many as 34 shops in December, 27 among them were found to have violated the rules. There were no price tags fixed/displayed on toys used by children. The date of manufacturing and other statutory information were also not available. Hence, action had been initiated against the shop owners. Similarly, it came to light that as many as 15 shops did not adhere to the Minimum Wages Act for its workers.
