“Regularisation issue can’t be solved through stirs”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Issues concerning the regularisation of services of temporary workers cannot be resolved through agitations. If the temporary workers attempt to sort out the issues through stirs, the State government will be forced to reconsider its decision of protecting the livelihood of the workers, according to an official release issued on Friday.

[The services of 11,000 temporary workers were hired on the basis of consolidated pay during the government employees’ strike in 2003.]

Referring to reports that a section of the workers were, at the instigation of some politicians, adopting the means of agitation to force the government to settle the issues, the release explained the government’s decision and stated that apart from those who had been selected by the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission, other temporary workers could be accommodated in a phased manner as and when vacancies arose. Till then, they would be given consolidated pay.

Recalling the steps taken by the government to regularise the services of the workers since 2006, the release said 4,103 workers were selected by the TNPSC after a special test, as a sequel to the High Court’s order. Subsequently, some workers moved the Madurai Bench of the High Court, which stayed the appointment of the selected workers.

The government has decided to fill further vacancies by appointing temporary workers and requested the Commission to issue a selection list of 1,510 workers, in addition to the 4,103 workers.

‘Confident of solution’

The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Union (TNGEU) said in a press release here that it was confident that the issue of temporary workers would be solved soon by the actions undertaken by the government. The release said that agitations would not resolve the problem and asked for the support of the union’s measures through government channels by all those involved.
