VIJAYAWADA: City gymnast D. Nagamallesh won five medals including a gold and silver in the u-17 segment of the 54th National School Games that concluded at Hyderabad recently. He won three bronzes in Roman Rings, Individual all-round and team championship and a gold medal in vaulting. He also won silver in the floor exercise. K.V. Suresh won a gold medal in the team championship and silver in high bar in the u-19 category. V. Sri Sowmya excelled in floor exercise by winning gold and a silver in the individual all-round in the u-19 segment. All the gymnasts are trainees at the SAI gymnastic centre at V.P. Siddhartha Public School. Badminton tournamentThe Guntur District Badminton Association (GDBA) will be hosting an all-India major ranking badminton tournament at the NTR Stadium and BR Stadium from January 3 to 8. The qualifying rounds will be held on January 3 and 4 at both the stadiums. The tournament will be held for both boys and girls in the under-16 and under-13 segments. As many as 958 entries from 17 States have been received. “We have received 130 entries in the u-16 boys singles and 120 in the u-13 singles. In the girls’ singles, we have received 80 and 70 entries for u-16 and u-13 segments respectively,” said Badminton Association India joint secretary K. Ch. Punnaiah Choudary here on Friday. State Bank of India, along with NRI institutions and Yonex Company, are sponsoring the six-day tournament. The main draw will commence on January 5. Tennis tournamentThe Krishna District Tennis Association (KDTA) will be conducting a two-day district championship at the tennis complex at Andhra Loyola College from Saturday. The events will be held for u-10, u-12 and u-14 boys and girls, according to KDTA secretary K. Pattabhiramaiah here on Friday.
