‘Public cooperation must’

NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan on Saturday said public cooperation is a must to put an end to the “anarchy” on the Capital’s roads.

Charging that the traffic police had completely failed to manage traffic in the metropolis, Dr. Vardhan said this was the reason why cases of violation of traffic rules on Delhi’s roads had shot up by 68 per cent.

“Hence it is necessary that the help of non-government organisations that have a good and honest image should be taken to improve the traffic in the city. Only if the traffic police is made accountable and responsible can the anarchy on the roads and deaths of innocent persons end,” he said.

Describing the traffic in Delhi as dangerous, the BJP leader said corruption in the State Government and traffic police was responsible for this. “The people are suffering due to extortion by the people managing the traffic. This is the reason why Blueline buses were responsible for three times more accidents than the Delhi Transport Corporation buses in 2008. Ninety per cent of the public transport vehicles run overloaded,” he added.

“Cases of traffic violation have increased. Many illegal parking lots have mushroomed at various places in the city because of connivance between the government and police. Hundreds of illegal parking lots are being run in the city,” he charged.
