Hegde, four others get Aloysian alumni award

MANGALORE: The second Eminent Aloysian Alumni Awards were conferred on scientist K.V. Rao, cardiologist Deviprasad Shetty, Educationist Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, Lokayukta Santosh Hegde and philanthropist Aubrey D’Souza here on Sunday.

The award was conferred on Mr. Rao for his contribution to the field of Nano Technology, on Dr. Shetty for his service to humanity in the field of cardiology, on Mr. Kunhi for his service in the field of education, on Mr. Hegde for his judicial service to the nation and on Mr. D’Souza for his achievement in the field of insurance.

The award-winners were felicitated with a souvenir, shawl, garland and a certificate. Receiving the honour, Mr. Hegde said he had got the award by default and “because of the faults done by others”. He was apparently referring to the Lokayukta raids conducted on officials who amassed wealth disproportional to their known sources of income. He thanked all those who had “failed in their duty” for ensuring that he was awarded.

Any award he got, said Mr. Hegde, was accepted on behalf of the office of Lokayukta, but not the one instituted by the Aloysius Group as it was very special. Mr. Hegde said he was surprised at people calling him an honest judge and added that judges were supposed to be honest.

Mr. Kunhi dedicated his success to St. Aloysius College, which he said taught him good values. He dedicated the award to all his teachers whom he referred to as “mentors.” The ceremony was followed by a special lecture by Mr. Rao on the “trends in Nano science that enables novel technologies”.
