Take terror issue to UNSC, Centre urged

BANGALORE: Senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu has appealed to the Union Government to take the terror issue to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and press for initiating action to destroy the infrastructure of terror in Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Naidu accused the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government of dragging its feet on the issue of tackling terrorism plaguing the country. “It is time the Union Government mobilises international opinion against Pakistan and takes the issue to the United Nations Security Council for acting against terror,” he said.

The BJP leader claimed that Pakistan’s involvement in the recent terror attack in Mumbai was clear. Instead of moving strongly and swiftly in the matter, the Union Government was merely making statements and not taking any action in the matter, he said.

Mr. Naidu expressed the BJP’s dissatisfaction with the new law against terror brought in by the Union Government in the wake of Mumbai terror attack. “The new Bill brought in by the UPA Government is inadequate. It is a half-hearted measure,” Mr. Naidu said and accused the Congress of fighting shy to bring in a sterner law against terrorism as the party was apprehensive of losing its Muslim vote-bank.

The BJP had to support the Bill as it wished to close in ranks with the ruling alliance against the issue of terrorism.
