KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Chamber of Commerce is convening an all-party meeting here on January 9 to press for the speedy implementation of road projects in the region, especially the proposed coastal highway. The Chamber in a statement here on Monday said the coastal highway project had been confined to the file for long now with no action initiated for its implementation. Reportedly the Central government was keen on implementing the project, and funds were earmarked for it. Under the circumstances efforts would be made to pressure the authorities to take up the work urgently. The coastal highway would reduce the distance between Vengalam and Ponnani by 40 km. The coastal highway that would run parallel to the major bypass, minor bypass and the National Highway in Kozhikode would ease the traffic congestion in the city to a great extent. The highway could be connected to the thoroughfares for more effective use. The meeting would also discuss the undue delay in the construction of the Kothi bridge. Though the bridge was completed years ago, construction of the approach road had been dragging on. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
