NEW DELHI: In a hideous incident, a 22-year-old MBA student returning home with her boyfriend in a car on Monday evening was abducted and criminally assaulted by a group of ten young men in neighbouring Noida. Both the victim and her friend are residents of South Delhi.

Acting swiftly on their complaint, the Noida police arrested five of the accused – identified as Pushpendra, Srikant, Sanjay, Sudhir and Gautam -- on Tuesday morning. A hunt has been launched for their accomplices.

The young girl was on her way back home in a Wagon-R car along with her friend after shopping at The Great India Palace mall in Sector 18 of Noida when the ten young men riding three motorcycles waylaid them around 5 p.m.

The victim’s boyfriend, who is also studying MBA along with her at the same institute, told the police that the men on motorcycles accosted them while they were negotiating a turn near a secluded drain in Sector 39.

“The two had barely travelled a kilometre from the shopping mall when the accused intercepted them. The men were carrying cricket bats and wickets. They got down from their motorcycles and got inside the car. While one of them sat at the wheel, the others beat up the male friend and drove the vehicle to a secluded spot,” said Superintendent of Police (City) Ashok Tripathi on Tuesday.

The young men, all in the 18-25 years group, allegedly took turns to criminally assault the girl at a deserted place. All the while, the victim’s friend was held hostage by the men. Before letting them off late in the night, the men took away the mobile phones of the victim and her boyfriend. “The victim reported the matter to the police at 1-30 a.m. and a case was registered at the Noida Sector 39 police station. We constituted six police teams and launched a hunt for the boys. Since they were all carrying cricket equipment, it made our job that much easier. The accused were arrested in Garhi Chaukhandi village within hours after the incident was reported to the police,” said Mr. Tripathi.

“Primary medical tests have not indicated any internal injuries to the victim. She will, however, be made to undergo more tests,” added Mr. Tripathi. For their part, the accused purportedly told the police that they were returning home after taking part in a cricket tournament in Bulandshahr when they spotted the girl and her boyfriend sitting inside their car parked by the roadside. All the accused are said to be village boys.
