Migrant workers fear a lot

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: The predominant migrant workers in the city look at 2009 with hopes of textile business rising, but at the same time they are a feared lot.

The increase in incidence of crimes during 2008 when compared to 2007 is cited as the prime reason for their concern. Official sources told The Hindu that the total property crime cases reported in Tirupur sub-division last year stood at 687 as against 303 cases in 2007. Statistics under different heads of offence showed that the cases of house burglary had increased from 38 in 2007 to 80 during last year. Similarly, robbery cases had doubled in 2008 against seven such incidents reported in 2007. Though cases charged for attempts to murder witnessed an increase in 2008 vis-À-vis 2007, the murders had come down in the sub-division last year.

“While 21 murders have taken place in 2007, it has come down to 19 last year,” police sources said.

However, assault cases increased from 160 in 2007 to 195 last year.

Sources said detection rate in property crimes last year stood at 53 per cent and 66 per cent of properties stolen were recovered.
