Praveen delights

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Sailing Association’s Praveen Prabhakar, sailing for the first time in Mumbai, won the invitational regatta for Optimists held by Sea Cadet Sailing at T S Jawahar recently.

The 14-year-old Praveen, who finished fifth in the Optimist Coastal Nationals 2008 held in Chennai, Ganapathy and Varsha, the under-12 champion at the nationals, were the three TNSA sailors who had competed in a fleet of 35 in this regatta.

Praveen won the regatta comprehensively with five firsts out of eight races and 12 points overall. Ganapathy finished fourth, while the 11-year-old Varsha ended 20th due to gear failure.

Good show by Ekalavya

S. Siddanth Ekalavya starred on the second and final day of the TNCA under-16 inter-district cricket quarterfinal match, claiming five wickets and scoring 63 to book Tiruvallur’s semifinal spot with a six-wicket win over Theni.

The scores: Theni 66 and 166 for eight in 40 overs (R. Anantharaman 61, B. Arun Kannan 33, Siddanth Ekalavya five for 34) lost to Tiruvallur 117 and 119 for four in 37.2 overs (Siddanth Ekalavya 63).

Postal chess inaugurated

Fourteen teams, including Jharkhand and Assam, are taking part in the all-India postal chess tournament, which was inaugurated on January 5.

The tournament will be played in individual and team championships formats. Tamil Nadu is the defending champion.

Sports competition

The St. Joseph’s College of Engineering will conduct n state-level inter-collegiate and school staff competition on January 7 at its premises. Events include (for men), ball badminton, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, football and carrom and (for women), badminton, table tennis, carrom and throwball.
