Drag race

The incident involving Mohammed Mukarram Pasha, the youth who was shot dead in Bangalore a few days ago after he entered the army premises, has brought into focus the menace of drag race in the city. Two weeks ago, I saw a couple of motorcyclists, whose bikes collided on a busy road, almost killing a baby and her parents. They were roughed up by an angry mob but nothing more was done. I am sure the two young men will continue to be a traffic hazard. What would have happened had the two killed the baby and her family or injured them seriously? Who would have compensated them? Mukarram’s family certainly deserves sympathy for losing a son. But it is difficult to sympathise with one who endangers the lives of others on the roads. I don’t think public opinion can be swayed in favour of drag racers.

G. Natarajan,
