Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for HMRC

CHENNAI: The Hindu Media Resource Centre (HMRC) of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, has been awarded the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for 2008. The award, instituted by the Indian Science Congress Association, is given every year to organisations or individuals who have sustained interest in popularising science. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave away the award, comprising of a citation and a cash award for Rs. 50,000, during the inaugural session of the Indian Science Congress in Shillong on January 3.

Established in 1988 with support from The Hindu group of newspapers, the HMRC acts as a science-society interface bringing together experts from diverse fields and media professionals to place in the public domain the major developments in science and technology for appropriate understanding and response of the society. The centre has developed dissemination strategies through organising millennium lectures, media workshops, public forums, multi-stakeholder dialogues on issues of global and local importance and relevance.
