Yellapur road has been damaged: Naik

‘Association is not against imposition of fines’

Karwar: Madhav Naik, director of the North Karnataka Lorry Owners’ Association, said on Tuesday that members of the association would launch an agitation if the authorities did not take steps to prevent movement of lorries overloaded with iron ore in the district within a week.

Addressing presspersons here, he said that the movement of such lorries increased in the district after export of iron ore to China resumed. The national highway from Yellapur to Baleguli near Ankola had been damaged because of movement of such lorries. He said that his association was not against imposition of fines on overloaded lorries. But there should be uniformity and this rule should be applicable to whole of Karnataka. Mr. Naik said that a bridge near Hattikeri village at Ankola was built in 1965. It could not withstand overloaded lorries. Hence, movement of lorries overloaded with iron ore should be stopped immediately. People of the village with help of various organisations would stage a protest if steps were not taken in this regard, he added. Office-bearers of the association Tulasidas Kamat and Manjunath Naik Belekeri were present.
