Sports meet off to a colourful start

VISAKHAPATNAM: NTR University of Health Sciences 12th inter-collegiate sports and game meet for women was off to a colourful start on GITAM University campus here on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor of Dr. N.T.R. Health University A.V. Krishnam Raju inaugurated the meet and took salute at the march past of the teams from 25 colleges from different parts of the State. Last year’s champion Rangaraya Medical College led the march past while the host GITAM Dental College and Hospital brought up the rear. Dr. Krishnam Raju announced that from this year the UHS would give cash awards to winners of the competition in a bid to encourage women in sports. He advised the girl students who were selected under sports quota not to ignore sports after joining the course. Some 250 athletes would compete in basketball, badminton, chess, table tennis, ball badminton, throwball, tennis, volleyball and athletics. GITAM University president M.V.V.S. Murthi said GITAM would give importance to sports. GITAM Dental College principal K. Gangadhara Prasad, UHS Sports Board secretary E. Thrimurthy, GITAM Physical Education Department Deputy Director K. Rama Krishna Rao and others participated.

Later, at a function held on the university campus Mr. Murthi honoured Dr. Krishnam Raju and Laureate Education Asia Limited’s senior vice-president Alan Diaz.

Thrust area

GITAM University would give high priority to basic sciences which were neglected in the country, Mr. Murthi said while briefing them about the university’s programmes and plans.
