Howrah: Three shops were burnt and members of two communities clashed over a Muharram procession in the Chak Kasi area in Howrah district of West Bengal on Thursday. District Magistrate Khalil Ahmed said curfew was imposed in the area. But, Superintendent of police Niraj Kumar Singh said curfew was not imposed and only prohibitory orders under Section 144 cr.PC were promulgated. Mr. Singh said a group objected to a Muharram procession near a temple. The request was rejected by the processionists, which led to the clash. Three shops were burnt, forcing the police to fire tear-gas shells, he said. — PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
