The Coimbatore Lorry Owners Association has asked the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister to take steps to bring down the prices of petrol and diesel prices to end truckers strike. Association secretary K.S. Kaliaperumal, in a memorandum to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister, said that the transport industry was already hit by the rise prices of tyre, spare parts and insurance premium. Movement of cargo has taken a serious beating in Western Tamil Nadu. In Coimbatore, vegetable growers have been managing to send their cargo through trains and omni buses to destinations in Kerala and other parts of Tamil Nadu. Within the city, the three wheel mini cargo vehicles have come handy for transporting the vegetables from whole sale markets to retail markets and residential areas. TNSTC buses have started accommodating luggage on bus roof tops. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
