Rs. 2-crore facelift for four bus stands

NAGAPATTINAM: Bus stands in Nagapattinam, Mayiladuturai, Sirkazhi and Vedaranyam in the district will soon get a facelift at a total cost of Rs. 2 crore.

All basic facilities, including improvement of roads within the bus stand, high-mast lights, good toilets, medical shops and amenities such as bus shelters for passengers are to be provided.

The works would be taken up shortly, Collector M. Jayaraman told The Hindu.

Mr, Jayaraman said that he inspected the four bus stands recently. Steps would be taken to prevent water logging in the bus stands. The municipal authorities had been instructed to maintain the bus stands in a hygienic condition and provide adequate sanitary workers to keep the premises clean. The bus stand in Nagapattinam required good lighting facility and high-mast lights would be provided there. Some voluntary organisations have come forward to provide service for the upkeep of the bus stand.

In Mayiladuturai, the two bus stands would be provided with basic amenities till the bus stand is shifted to a new place. The Collector said that during his recent visit to Sirkazhi, the people had represented to him for expanding the bus stand for parking more buses and more bus services from Sirkazhi to Nagapattinam and several villages. Similarly, the people of Vedaranyam requested for more buses on the Vedaranyam-Tiruthuraipoondi and Vedaranyam-Nagapattinam route.
