NEW DELHI: In these times of global “meltdown” when the corporate cash crunch is all too evident, sponsorship support for sporting disciplines has taken a hit.

Chess, as compared to many others, has remained the least affected since it has never attracted any major corporate patron in spite of the Indians setting new benchmarks at all levels.

Conversely, in the present scenario, it is indeed creditable that the seventh edition of the Parsvnath International Open chess tournament that begins at the Modern School, Barakhamba Road, here on Sunday will see an enhanced prize-money of Rs. 11.50 lakh.
