Thanjavur: Review of literature should be taken up as a prelude for doing research on the historiography of Tamil classical literature, said S.N.Kandasamy, former Professor and Head of the Department of Tamil, Tamil University here on Friday. He was delivering the key-note address at the conference on Historiography of classical Tamil literature organised by the Centre for Periyar Thought at Periyar Maniammai University in collaboration with Centre for classical Tamil Research. Dr. Kandasamy said that inscriptional, archaeological, numismatics evidences should be cited to determine the period of literature. Ancientness of Tamil literature is bracketed in 1,000 years from fifth century B.C to fifth century A.D. K.Veeramani, Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University, also called for review of literature. Quoting Periyar EVR, Dr. Veeramani said that language is a weapon to compete in world competition and struggles. While we can be proud of the ancientness of the language, it should be subjected to changes. Periyar did not approve giving a divine or a religious status to language. Researchers should look at language in a secular way. He released the collection of research papers at the conference. M.Rajendran, Vice-chancellor, Tamil University received the first copy.
