Baalu: we will continue talks with truckers

Staff Reporter

KARUR: Union Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T.R. Baalu said on Sunday that law would take its course in the issue of arrested All-India Motor Transport Congress leaders in the wake of the continuing truckers’ strike that entered the seventh day on Sunday. He, however, pointed out that the government would talk to the truck operators in a bid to end the impasse.

Refusing to categorise as hard or soft the Ministry’s stance in dealing with the AIMTC leaders and their strike call, Mr. Baalu told the media at Lalapet, near here, that the Ministry would act as per the demands of the situation, keeping in mind the welfare of the public. Steps were been taken to ensure transport of essential commodities.

“Some States have brought transport under the Essential Services Maintenance Act. All the States have to grapple with a lot of issues in the wake of the strike. Monday’s conference of State Transport Ministers in New Delhi would deliberate on the issues we are confronted with,” Mr. Baalu said.

Asked what if the strike continued, the Minister quipped that the government action would also continue. The stress would be on finding a solution to the issues.
