This Day That Age
Close on the heels of the increased “rabi” foodgrains production campaign initiated in September last year, early reports about which have indicated good progress, the Government of India is launching a “kharif” foodgrains production campaign this year. However, unlike the “rabi” campaign, which was confined only to eight States and the Union Territory of Delhi, the “kharif” foodgrains production drive will cover the entire country. Another striking difference is that whereas the stress in the earlier campaign was on the production of wheat, the country’s second most important cereal, the present drive calls for concentration on the production of rice which tops the list of foodgrains in the country both from the point of view of production and consumption. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
