Arun, Bhavana triumph

BANGALORE: Arun Cyril and Bhavana claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively in the 40+ section of the OSEL State veterans’ table tennis chamuionship held at Malleswaram Association. Arun defeated C.S. Jagdish 11-5, 11-4, 11-7 while Bhavana beat Mandakini Deshpande 11-9, 5-11, 12-10, 11-6 in the women’s final.

The other winners were S.K. Balakrishna (50+ singles ), K. Satyanaryana (60+ singles); S.K. Balakrishna and K.A. Udayashankar (open doubles).

Karnataka team

Karnataka will field a nine-member team comprising five boys and four girls for 70th Junior and Youth National table tennis championship scheduled to be held at Surat from January.17 to 21.

The team:

Boys: C.P. Karthik, A.R. Navneeth, V. Akhil, Akshaya Mohanta and P. Punith. Girls: N. Poojitha, N. Nisarga, C. Subhashree and Malathi Bhaskar. Coaches: Krunal Telang and Praveen Joshi.

Cavaliers CC wins

Cavaliers CC won the Metro Shield in the KSCA fourth division (Group I) tournament with a 30-run victory over Young Lions Club in the final here.

An all-round performance by D. Santosh Kumar, who took 10 wickets in the match and scored 77 and 52, went in vain for Young Lions.

The scores: Cavaliers CC 218 for nine in 55 overs (Rakesh 51, Jagdish 47, D. Santhosh Kumar five for 83) and 109 in 28.4 overs (D. Santhosh Kumar five for 46) bt Young Lions Club 175 in 54.4 overs ( D. Santhosh Kumar 77) and 122 in 29.5 overs ( D. Santhosh Kumar 52, Anand five for 27).

Gautham to lead

Wicketkeeper batsman C.M. Gautham will lead Karnataka in the P.S. Ram Mohan Rao Trophy (under-25) cricket tournament scheduled to be held in Goa from January 17 to 25.

The team: C.M. Gautham (Capt.), C.B. Karthik, K.C. Avinash, Amit Verma, Raju Bhatkal, S.P. Manjunath, Chetan Williams, Udit B. Patel, Aditya B. Sagar, A. Mithun, Arjun Shetty, Nischit, Nikhil Kashyap and Jonathan.

Karnataka to field 95-member squad

Reigning champion Karnataka will field a 95- member contingent for the 22nd South Zone aquatic championship scheduled to be held at Chennai from January 16 to 18. The squad includes 69 swimmers and 26 water polo players.

The South Zone championship is the first major meet in the National calendar for 2009. It will be followed by the National Games in February, sub-junior and junior Nationals in July-August and the senior championship in September.
