A twin treat for film buffs
The American Library at the U.S. Consulate screens two films today — “Beyond Belief” at 11 a.m. and “Rio Bravo” at 2 p.m.. A film by Beth Murphy, “Beyond Belief” is about the aftermath of 9/11. After two “soccer moms,” Susan Retik and Patti Quigley, lose their husbands in the events of 9/11, grief compels them to focus on Afghanistan, the country where the terrorists who took their husbands’ lives were trained. Over the course of two years, these extraordinary women dedicate themselves to empowering Afghan widows. As they make the courageous journey to the most desperate Afghan villages, they establish a powerful bond with each other. “Rio Bravo”, directed by Howard Hawks, will be screened next. There’s a showdown at Rio Bravo when courageous Sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne), throws the brother of evil cattle baron Nathan Burdette in jail for murder. When Burdette’s men lay seige to his jailhouse, Chance holds on until the arrival of a U.S. Marshal with the help of his drunken deputy Stumpy (Walter Brennan), Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and the beautiful Feathers (Angie Dickinson).
