Action, the Japanese way

UTV World Movies will telecast ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano’s ‘Sonatine,’ a Japanese film, today, 8.30 p.m. Takeshi Kitano, who directs this story of the last days of a tough Tokyo gangster, also plays the lead in the film.

Kitano dons the role of Murakawa, a ruthless Yakuza. He is sent to intervene in a gang war on the island of Okinawa. Things go awry and his gang is forced to retreat to a seaside hideaway. They kill time fooling around on the beach when their enemies start picking them off one by one. Murakawa gears himself up for a showdown which forms an edge-of-the-seat finale. Deeply lyrical scenes are juxtaposed with shocking outbursts of violence, an aspect that should add to the excitement in ‘Sonatine.’

Besides Takeshi, the cast includes Aya Kokumai and Tetsu Watanabe.
