UNMIN term to be extended

KATHMANDU: The United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), which has been assisting in Nepal’s peace process since 2007, is likely to get a new mandate. A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday has agreed to extend its term one more time.

Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokharel told reporters that the meeting agreed “in principle” for the extension. “There has been agreement in principle to extend UNMIN’s mandate, considering the ongoing peace process and the need to integrate and rehabilitate the Maoist combatants,” he said.

UNMIN has been looking after Maoists’ weapons and Maoist combatants sheltered in 28 different cantonments.
