Hospitality industry beckons in New Zealand

Severe shortage of skilled personnel in tourism, hospitality sectors, says MD of Professional Bar and Restaurant School

There are plenty of jobs and demand for skilled people in the hospitality industry in New Zealand, said Scot Ramsay, Managing Director of The Professional Bar and Restaurant School, a New Zealand-based hospitality management institute, during a seminar held earlier this week.

With campuses in Auckland and Wellington, the school has been training students from 1993, equipping them with skills and qualifications to get into the hospitality industry.

The Hospitality Management course offered by the school enables students to gain employment in international hotels, cruise liners, super yachts, resorts, bars, cafés and restaurants.

‘Level five’ rating

The two-year programme is recognised by other countries and has got a ‘level five’ rating as per the New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA). Most of our students have been placed with the Hilton hotels and international cruise liners, said Mr. Ramsay.

Moreover, with the impact of global meltdown seen everywhere, according to Mr. Ramsay, there are a lot of opportunities in the hospitality industry in New Zealand.

No meltdown effect

“We have not been hit by the economic slowdown. On the flipside, there is huge shortage of skilled personnel in the tourism and hospitality sectors,” he said.

20 hours work

Students taking up the course can work for no more than 20 hours per week and full time during vacations for the academic years.

Those who are 18 years of age can apply for the course; however, they should have scored a 5.5 in the IELTS test.
