AU campus getting ready for new academic year
APARNA ALLURI,
Andhra University campus is getting ready for the new academic year that commences this week. While admissions for the post-graduate courses are on, AU administration is sprucing up the hostels for the new and old students. Over the last two weeks, the AU administration has concentrated on the research scholars’ hostels-GMC Balayogi Hostel and Vidya Hostel-and sent out those who have overstayed after completing their thesis and also the Teacher Associates. The latter have been provided temporary accommodation and have to look for accommodation after some months. Initially the administration faced some resistance when it asked the overstaying scholars to vacate but firm stand of the administration saw the rooms vacated. Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy personally supervised the action. With the new academic year to start in a few days, July 7 for the freshers and July 1 for the second year students, all steps are being taken by Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana to prevent ragging of juniors in the campus and outside. He has formed committees to keep an hawk’s eye on the campus and also provided a toll free helpline telephone number for the junior to lodge complaints. Publicity programme is on to avoid ragging and the severe punishment one receives if he or she rags juniors. Prof. Satyanarayana is also holding meetings with the faculty, Chief Wardens and Wardens of hostels to discuss the academic matters and on facilities in the hostels.
For the first time in many years students of Andhra Medical College enjoyed the exercise of contesting the elections and exercising their franchise. Elections to the students’ executive council were held some time ago in the college. Earlier, most of the posts were filled unanimously after consensual discussions but this year many posts witnessed keen contest. Fight for the post of general secretary was a close affair and P.B.P.R. Naidu and his classmate Abhiram showed a lot of promises on the students and ultimately the former won with a margin of just 10 votes. Contest for the cultural secretary post was the keenest one. Prashanth pipped his roommate by just one vote. V. Pavan and Gargya were elected as sports secretaries while B. Gayatri and Lakshmikanta won unopposed as associate general secretary and associate cultural secretary respectively. Principal G. Bhagya Rao congratulated the elected representatives and exhorted them to work together in maintaining the standards and stature of the college. AMC is also bracing itself up to control ragging in the college when juniors are admitted in first year in a few weeks time. Dr. Bhagya Rao and Vice-Principal K. Venkateswarlu, at a meeting of faculty and students, announced a series of measures being planned to prevent any form of ragging. Dr. Bhagya Rao and Dr. Venkateswarlu said anti-ragging squads, comprising students and staff, would be formed, security personnel would be posted at vulnerable places, discussions and sessions would be held with students, short video films would be screened and a telephone helpline would be established. A comprehensive action plan had been drawn up to have a ragging free atmosphere, said Dr. Bhagya Rao and Dr. Venkateswarlu.
