34 SSLC toppers presented laptops

TIRUCHI: Thirty-four high scoring students in the SSLC public examinations 2008-09 from the district were presented with laptop computers under a government-sponsored scheme here on Sunday.

The laptops were handed over to the students by Transport Minister K.N. Nehru in the presence of Forest Minister N. Selvaraj and Collector T. Soundiah here on Sunday.

The government had allotted 34 computers to the district and accordingly students who had secured 480 marks and above in the exam were presented with laptops, each costing Rs.30,680. The laptops were given only to student toppers who had studied in Tamil medium.

Among the beneficiaries were R. Aishwarya of Sirumalar Girls Higher Secondary School who had secured 490 marks, D. Thamarai of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Thathaiyengarpet, G. Meera of Annai Girls Higher Secondary School, Kottapalayam, D. Divya of Holy Cross Girls Higher Secondary School, Tiruchi, and R. Karthikeyan of Vivekananda High School, Thiruparaithurai (each with 489 marks) and R. Kamalasri of Holy Cross Girls Higher Secondary, Golden Rock, with a tally of 488 marks.

The laptops fitted with a camera and a DVD writer can be operated for two hours non-stop with batteries and with electricity using an adapter.

CEO K. Swaminathan and other officials were present.
