For cleaner, greener energy

PAROMITA PAIN

It’s all about harnessing the power of the wind, as this is an energy that is environment friendly.

“I’m the second Khan winning a World Cup for Pakistan, so I’m very proud,” said skipper Younis Khan.

Catch the wind : Harness the power.

The wind in your hair. You, running like the wind. There’s something about a windy day that raises spirits and makes people happy. But there’s more to wind than this. It was to show young people that wind can be harnessed that the recent “Global Wind Day” was celebrated. Marked in association with IWTMA, in association with Global Wind Energy Council, the beach with its blue waves and cool breeze was the best setting for kids who gathered to understand how wind can be the one source of energy that the world will look to in the future.

I promise to…

The Madras Progressive Union Higher Secondary School students were enthusiastic participants. They took the pledge, with the wind energy enthusiasts present, to promote cleaner, greener energy and prevent global warming. While no special programmes have been held to explain or mark the importance of the day in their school, they had quite a comprehensive idea of what this was about. Vinoth, Std VIII, was clear that as an energy this was important since electricity could be produced from it. For A.P Kumar wind power is something he will associate forever with the picture of a windmill he had seen in his textbook. Monikanath, Std X, couldn’t wait to learn more since it was a natural and renewable source.

A rally to the Vivekananda Illam, was followed by a street-play titled, “24-am Elikesi” produced by Expression Academy of Entertainment emphasising the benefits of wind energy. This is just the starting of the campaign.

Phase II will involve school activation programmes where IWTMA aims to interest young people in the theme of Believe in Wind Energy – It is the Future. Competitions will be conducted in over 20 schools for Stds.VIII-XII in the areas of painting, designing a miniature windmill model and essay writing. Three winners per batch will be taken on an educational trip to enlighten their knowledge on wind technology and understand the benefits of wind energy.

Some facts

Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form, such as electricity, using wind turbines.

Wind power produces about 1.5 per cent of worldwide electricity use, and is growing rapidly.

Several countries have achieved relatively high levels of wind power penetration.

As of May 2009, eighty countries around the world are using wind power on a commercial basis.

Wind (and solar) energy as a power source is favoured by environmentalists as an alternative to fossil fuels, because they are plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, and produce no greenhouse gas emissions.
