Rs. 1-crore improvement work on at garbage dump in Thanjavur

THANJAVUR: Thanjavur Municipality has taken up improvement work at the compost yard at Sekkadi Jebamalaipuram near Transport Corporation depot at Thanjavur.

“Improvement work at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore is going on at the yard. Apart from helping easy movement of vehicles inside the yard, the project will also see the creation of a vermin-composting facility,” official sources said.

The yard located on 20.1 acres of land handles 110 tonnes of garbage per day. The wastes are segregated into degradable and non-degradable solids. According to municipal sources, the garbage collected in the town is moved to the yard through 25 autorickshaws, six tippers and a lorry.

The improvement work includes laying of cement concrete roads inside the yard, providing water and toilet facility, construction of drainage outlets, and a service station for vehicles and construction of recycling platforms.

A compound wall will also be constructed and saplings be planted to provide a green belt. A vehicle shed is also under construction.

“Already vermi compost preparation is going on using vegetable waste from market and other bio-degradable wastes. Once production starts, vermicompost can be sold to the farmers,” the sources said.

Solid waste management project is also being implemented in the town jointly by Thanjavur Municipality and Periyar Maniammai University.

Under this programme, training has been given to school students, teachers, people, hoteliers, doctors, para medical staff, members of voluntary oragnisations in solid waste management. Thanjavur Medical College has been chosen as a model and solid waste management is implemented here by using coloured dustbins to segregate wastes and inculcating the habit among visitors and patients to use the dustbins.
