CHENNAI: Author Vikram Seth, who, along with a group of activists, once signed an open letter directed to the Government of India and the Delhi High Court asking it to decriminalise Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, is thrilled about the order striking down the provision of the section which criminalised consensual sexual acts of adults in private. “It is a great day, a day of celebration,” he told The Hindu over phone from the U.K. Complimenting Judges Shah and Muralidhar on a “lucid, clear and admirable judgment,” he said it would be difficult to appeal against in a higher court. “It is a well-reasoned judgment and a very strong recommendation for a certain course of action.” Mr. Seth said he believed judges in other States too were likely to be influenced by this order. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
