BANGALORE: The Government has decided to repatriate 588 lecturers from pre-university colleges to degree colleges in the State. According to sources, an order to this effect was issued on June 30. The 588 lecturers, who will now be accommodated in degree colleges, are the last lot of lecturers deputed to PU colleges following the bifurcation of composite degree colleges in 2001. When the government decided to bifurcate composite degree colleges into pre-university colleges and degree colleges in 2001, 1,900 lecturers were shifted to pre-university colleges, much against their wishes. Following an agitation, the then Government had assured to repatriate the lecturers back to degree colleges as and when the vacancies arose. “About 300 lecturers were shifted to degree colleges between 2001 and 2004 against vacancies arising out of either retirement or increased work load,” said the sources. During 2004, about 600 more were repatriated on the basis of a government order that vacancies can be filled up in aided subjects in unaided combinations in degree colleges. From 2004 to 2008, about 500 more were shifted as and when vacancies arose. Welcoming the recent order to repatriate the 588 remaining lecturers, Bangalore University College Teachers Association general secretary Ramachandrappa said it had ensured justice to all the lecturers, who had been shifted from degree colleges to pre-university colleges. However, the shifting of lecturers from pre-university colleges to degree colleges is likely to create a shortage of lecturers. The Pre-University Board is expected to take a decision on filling up the vacancies soon. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
