Archers descend on Kolkata

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The cream of Indian archery has assembled here at the SAI, Eastern Centre, to attend a three-day selection trials beginning on Saturday to pick the Indian contingent for the World Cup Stage IV at Shanghai in China from August 4 to 9. The teams will be announced on Monday.

The Archery Association of India (AAI) is unlikely to send the Indian teams for the third Asian Grand Prix at Kuala Lumpur from July 5 to 12. Instead, the AAI wants the archers to get ready for the Shanghai meet.

The AAI annual general meeting in New Delhi on Saturday is also expected to take a final decision on India hosting the fourth Asian Grand Prix at New Delhi from September 15-19.

The AAI has also decided to retain the men’s trio of Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee and Mangal Singh Champia and the women’s threesome of Dola Banerjee, Laishram Bombayla Devi and Rimil Biruly in the recurve bow contingent to Shanghai.

This would mean that only one slot would be available for selection in both men’s and women’s categories.

Badminton tourney

The West Bengal Badminton Association (WBBA) will organise a four-day all-Bengal senior State-ranking tournament at Raipur Club from July 7 to 10. The prize money meet is the first of the season in which all top-notch players are expected to participate.

Competitions will be held in men’s and women’s singles and doubles with approximately 70 shuttlers likely to be in the fray.

Judo championship

The West Bengal Judo Association (WBJA) will organise the Bengal Cup on Sunday at its club. The one-day meet is likely to attract as many as 150 judokas from all over Bengal.
