‘Global art square’ for Jaipur

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The historic Jaleb Chowk in the Walled City of Jaipur will be developed shortly as a “global art square” to reflect the Pink City’s rich cultural heritage. A new handicraft market will come up at the square, while a museum is proposed to be set up in the adjacent old Assembly building.

Rajasthan Urban Development Minister Shanti Dhariwal said here that all the government offices had been shifted from Jaleb Chowk to make way for the market. “Marketing of items such as Jaipuri quilts, jewellery, paintings, trinkets and craft material will help promote the handicraft sector of the capital city,” he said.

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation and the Jaipur Development Authority have sanctioned Rs.3 crore and Rs.1 crore, respectively, for construction and beautification works in Jaleb Chowk. Mr. Dhariwal said works valued at Rs.2.35 crore had been completed. Mr. Dhariwal said the famous Govind Deo temple in the vicinity would also be given a facelift as part of the project.
