Solid waste management plant to be cleaned today

Staff Correspondent

The move follows complaints from residents of Kurvalu

Drainage from the plant is said to be flowing near houses

The aerobic pond is overflowing due to heavy rain

Udupi: President of the Udupi City Municipal Council Dinakar Shetty said on Friday that the cleaning and bleaching works at the solid waste management plant at Kurvalu in Alevoor village will be taken up from Saturday.

Mr. Shetty told The Hindu that there were complaints by a few residents of Kurvalu that the untreated drainage from the plant was passing near their houses. This problem had arisen because the aerobic pond at the plant was overflowing owing to heavy rains on Thursday. The City Municipal Council had begun draining out water from the plant.

Reason

He said that the water from the plant was being treated before being discharged.

The work on the solid waste management under the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP) had not been completed and hence the problem.

People’s demand

Bowing to the demands of the local people, the City Municipal Council had decided to have the drains of the plant on its eastern side, where no one was living.

Initial problems

Since the plant started functioning a few months ago, the initial problems were bound to occur. The City Municipal Council would overcome them with the support of the people, Mr. Shetty said.
