Bangalore: Katta Subramanya Naidu, Minister for IT, BT, Excise and BWSSB, on Friday visited different parts of the city inspecting work on “raja kaluve” and storm water drains.

Speaking to presspersons, who accompanied him, the Minister said he had directed the BBMP officials to draw up a “zero sewage in storm water drains” project. “Most drains in the city are clogged with sewage and overgrowth of weeds. After a project is drawn up, I will discuss with Union Minister of Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy and try to get some funds for it under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.”

He said that many apartment complexes and homes were letting out sewage into the storm water drains unauthorisedly. “This project will be an integrated package for the city. We will implement it strictly and make it a model for others in the country,” he said.

Mr. Naidu, who visited Malleswaram, Mathikere, Sanjaynagar, Hebbal, Byatarayanapura, Sarvagnanagar and other areas, said he had directed BBMP officials to complete works on storm water drains, shoulder drains and under-bridges on a war-footing. The officials were also told to desilt all drains in the city. “I have asked them to remove the bottlenecks and strictly deal with encroachments. The commissioner and other top officials have been directed to oversee the progress of these works.”

The Minister also said that the city needed a long-term plan for a proper trunk-line system. “
