Unrest over youth’s death in Dehra Dun

DEHRA DUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Saturday ordered a CB-CID probe into an alleged action police that resulted in the death of a young MBA student from Ghaziabad, Ranvir Singh, who had come here to join a job on Friday.

Not satisfied with the Chief Minister’s assurance of action, relatives of the boy on Saturday demanded a CBI probe to find out why and how Ranvir had been taken into custody by the police from a dharamshala and later shot dead in the “encounter” in the jungle.

“Ranvir has been a very peace-loving boy with no criminal record and only a high-level inquiry will reveal the truth,” they said. A large crowd surrounded the post-mortem ward where Ranvir’s body was kept and tension mounted after his father refused to accept the body.

IANS reports:

Ranvir, 23, was killed following a scuffle, the police said. He and two others on a motorcycle sped away after snatching a policeman’s service revolver, the police charged. When they were spotted again and asked to surrender, they opened fire following which the policemen retaliated, leaving him dead, they claimed.

His family asserted that Ranvir had no criminal record. “There was not a single case against him anywhere. The bike the police showed he was driving was also not his,” a family member said.
