Artists pay tributes to Tyeb Mehta

NEW DELHI: Eminent personalities from the world of art paid glowing tributes to the distinguished painter Tyeb Mehta, who passed away on July 1 in Mumbai, at a condolence meeting at Lalit Kala Akademi here on Saturday.
Lalit Kala Akademi chairman Ashok Vajpeyi said: “The world of art is much poorer by the passing away of Tyeb Mehta. There was an unfailing nobility about his art and his personality. His vision was firmly rooted in the socio-political ethos, anxieties and turbulence of our times. His masterly and well-constructed art strove to explore the human condition ranging from fury to tranquillity, from darkness to hope and from effacement to assertion.”
“The last few years of his life were full of physical pain and suffering,” he recalled, adding that the 84-year-old painter’s art and humanity would stand the test of time.
Veteran painter Krishen Khanna described the life of Tyeb Mehta as “the embodiment of difficulties”.
He said the painter faced problems with his voice, heart and vision yet never displayed sadness or self-pity.
