Importance of nanotechnology stressed
A refresher course on “Fundamentals and Applications of Nanotechnology” was held at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Inaugurating the course, Vice-Chancellor P. Murugesa Boopathi pointed out that the use of nanotechnology in agriculture had been mostly theoretical. But, it would have a significant effect in areas like plant protection, food industry, development of new functional materials, product development, and design of methods and instrumentation for food safety and bio-security. Undergraduate teachers handling the course on nanotechnology were trained to deliver the course content and course materials in an effective manner to the students. A workshop was held at the Amrita School of Engineering to give students an introduction to Formula SAE design challenge and BAJA ASIA SAEINDIA 2010. It gave an overview on how to proceed with this new concept and the nuances of the building formula cars and All Terrain Vehicles (ATV). Over 150 students from all over the nation participated in the workshop. The workshop provided a wide perspective in areas of design, manufacturing and team management. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Applications of PSG College of Technology celebrated the National Statistics Day. R. Nadarajan, Head, Department of Mathematics and Computer Application, inaugurated the celebrations and also the activities of the Statistics Association for 2009-2010. He spoke on various applications of statistics. R. Thilagavathy, P. Gowri and G. Arunkumar won the first prize in the quiz competition organised by the NSSO (National Sample Survey Organization), Coimbatore, under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation of Government of India as a part of National Statistics Day celebrations. The Students’ Forum of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women was inaugurated recently by Anshul Mishra, Commissioner, Coimbatore Municipal Corporation. The secretaries of the various associations were initiated and administered their oaths. With hard work one can face challenges boldly to achieve success. The NSS Unit of Bishop Ambrose College organised an anti-drug demonstration at Sungam recently. NSS volunteers participated in the demonstration and carried anti-drug banners for creating awareness among the public in order to make them stop taking toxic drugs. A national symposium on Research Methods and Research Directions in Computer Science and Engineering was held at the G.R. Govindarajulu School of Applied Computer Technology. The symposium focused on selection and formulation of research problems, problem modelling, research methodology, data collection and techniques, date analysis and interpretation, report writing and simulated thinking on frontier research topics. Experts from various areas spoke to the students on the topic. Shri Nehru Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science organised a faculty development programme in association with the Coimbatore Welfare Association. Resource persons spoke to the participants on enhancing teaching skills and recent trends in higher education. Resource persons from colleges and universities spoke on topics like global scenario in higher education, total quality management in higher education and teach to reach. Sri Gee College of Arts and Science organised a lecture on “Career Opportunities in Banks”. K.V. Suresh, Branch Manager, Karur Vysya Bank, pointed out how students needed to be prepared to get employed in banks. Pleasing personality and basic computer knowledge were mandatory for aspirants, he said. He also told students to be prepared in computer skills to attempt the bank examinations that were conducted online. The first year students of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College were welcomed by the college at function organised on their behalf. Mr. Kavidasan, the chief guest, spoke to the students and encouraged them with inspiring words. He said that one’s thoughts can change the life of a person into a better one. Students along with their parents attended the programme. The School of Computer Science and Technology of Karunya University organised an IEEE faculty development programme in association with the IEEE Madras Section. Faculty members of engineering streams, research students and personnel from industries attended the programme. It focused on security issues like database security, network security, real time system security and ethical hacking and countermeasures. Experts from National Informatics Centre, BHEL, Symantec and Kaspersky Labs delivered keynote addresses. The Association of Electronics and Communication Department of Coimbatore Institute of Technology was inaugurated recently. Gaur Dattatreya, General Manager (RBEI), Bosch, was the chief guest. He spoke to the students on the topic “Electronics and Automobiles”. He gave away the Robert Bosch award to three students who had graduated in 2008 for their project “Enhanced Adaptive Frequency Hopping”. The award comprised certificate, medal and a purse of Rs. 10,000. Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Management Association of Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology organised an off-campus workshop at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. The workshop was to create knowledge in developing case studies on emerging trends in management. Students were taught the nuances of developing case studies with the help of the case study “Quality of Education in Engineering Institutes”. A short term course on Web Designing, sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board was launched at CSI Technical and Vocational Training College. Some 20 beneficiaries from various slums of Coimbatore have been selected to pursue the course. On the occasion of the launch, certificates were distributed to those who had taken up the previous training programme on desktop publishing. KTVR Knowledge Park for Engineering and Technology celebrated its Founder’s Day recently. Mahamaharishi Paranjothiar, Founder, Universal Peace Foundation, Thirumoorthi Hills, was the chief guest for the occasion. S. Subramanian, former General Manager, Anna Transport Corporation, spoke to the students about the founder K.T. Venkatarama Reddy. Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran visited the NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion, affiliated to Bharatiyar University, and held an interactive session with the students to understand the technology development projects undertaken by them. Mr Maran urged them to come with creative designs and patterns which in turn could be used by the industrialists to give value addition to their product portfolio.Tirupur Exporters Association president A Sakthivel and College chairman Raja Shanmugam were present.
