Village kids have a way with computers
The Community Learning Centre (CLC) started in a remote village Thalinji near Viralimalai in Pudukottai district has immensely benefited a group of students of the Government H.S. School in Iluppur village in Pudukottai district in learning the basics of computer literacy. A total of 11 students have so far enrolled themselves as beneficiaries of the CLC, started a month ago under the JRD Eco-Technology Project of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in the village. They assemble at the CLC, in batches, and practise for about an hour daily learning the fundamentals of computer programmes. .“We teach them M.S. Office, Power-point and Excel. We plan to include photoshop in course of time,” says the technical assistant and CLC in-charge, P. Senthilkumar. Animators R. Rajeswari and P. Vasanthi handle the sessions, imparting training to the students. A student beneficiary E. Ramasamy, who joined CLC recently, said he could develop his computer knowledge through regular practice. “I have learnt the fundamentals of Microsoft,” he says.
Another Std. XI student of Computer Science, R. Tamizhselvi, points out that CLC has facilitated her to learn the contents of her computer syllabus. Also, she could get her doubts cleared through practical sessions at CLC. “I have gained a complete knowledge of Star Office and C++,” she says. The principal scientist and programme co-ordinator, JRD Eco-Technology project, M. Nageswaran, says a close monitoring was the highlight of the programme. The feedback from every student on what they learnt during the session was recorded daily, he adds.
