Safety provisions needed in Alangudi

I recently went to the famous guru temple, Alangudi Gurusthalam in Tiruvarur district. Every day thousands of –devotees are offering 24 lamps (ghee lamp) just opposite to the sanctum sanctorum of Guru. It is not maintained properly. With oil spilt all over the floor the elderly people are unable to walk around. The place is filled with smoke and exhaust provisions are absent. No trace of fire extinguishers is found in a place which is more susceptible to fire accidents. Most of the crowded temples do not give due importance to safety measures to ensure the wellbeing of devotees. So I request the concerned authorities to take necessary steps.

Maintenance, not so good

The Railways could take more steps to maintain the second class compartments in the trains. Some of the toilets stink. A few of the glass windows and shutters are not in working condition, the metal stays get stuck and are rusty. It should not be lost on the Railways that majority of the travelling public are lower class passengers who help swell its kitty. So they do deserve better treatment.

“Introduce slip coaches”

Since there is no direct connectivity of trains with suitable timings to southern districts from Nagore, I request railway authorities to take necessary steps to introduce slip coaches – atleast 2 sleeper class and 1 unreserved second class coaches each from Nagore at late hours to be attached at Trichy Junction with Pothigai Express and Anantapuri Express for the comfort of those from southern districts to visit holy places like Nagore, Velakanni and Navagragha Temples. Similarly these slip coaches can be made to reach Nagore early in the mornings.

“Ease congestion”

From Karur to Tiruchi, we are having passenger train facility in the morning. This passenger train reaches Kulithalai around 8 a.m., and arrives at Tiruchi Junction by 9 a.m. This train time is convenient to all including office, college and school goers and employees of various companies. In this train the available compartments are eight, which is inadequate for the passengers. Moreover most of them travel hanging in the steps regularly as the compartments are full making it evident that the volume of passengers is more when compared to the compartments. I request the concerned railway authorities to attach additional compartments to this train so that passengers can breathe easy.

Long-pending announcement

In the interim Railway Budget presented by Lalu Prasad Yadav as Railway Minister, an announcement was made on extending the Tiruchi – Ernakulam Express to Nagore. Even in the full-fledged Railway Budget presented in the Parliament a few days ago, Ms. Mamata Banerjee has repeated the same statement. But the Railways should come forward to announce when this announcement will become a reality.

New taluk

Adirampattinam is the largest and fast-developing Town Panchayat in Thanjavur district. Formation of a new taluk with Adirampattnam as its headquarters is one of the long-awaiting demands of the people residing in and around the town. It may be done by bifurcating Pattukkotai Taluk. Some areas of Sethubavachatram Panchayat Union of Peravurani Taluk might also be joined to the new taluk. This will help to cater to the growing needs of the people and eventually get more amenities. Hence, the administrative authorities of the State government may consider creating a new taluk of Adirampattinam.

“Market gold coins”

Kumbakonam is a temple city as well as a business centre. Many come here from surrounding areas to purchase gold ornaments. I request the Postal Department to introduce marketing of gold coins through Kumbakonam Head Post Office as is being done at the Thanjavur Head Post office.

Remedy to water problem sought

At Thippiarajapuram near Kumbakonam, though all the residents have drinking water supply connections from the overhead tank, people do not get regular supply due to frequent power failure. Two years back people were provided with 24 hours of regular water supply. And the state-of-affairs has changed now, the people say. Local officials should take remedial measures and set right the problem immediately.

Alternative withdrawal procedures

Pensioners, especially women above 70 years are finding it difficult to draw pension through ATM machines since they have to operate various options especially when they are not educated. They have to necessarily disclose their PIN number to their daughter or son who help them in drawing the money. I wish the banks could come out with more easy ways of withdrawing the money enabling the older people to do the same independently without the help of others.
