Training and injury
Weight training builds all-round strength and need not strain the shoulder or lower back as perceived by some. According to ‘Mr. India’ N. Mohammed Abdullah: “In the majority of the cases, minor injuries such as spasm, sprain and in flammation occur owing to poor exercise form, lack of mind-muscle link or insufficient warm-ups. Kinesiologist Michael Yessis says every trainee should do an in-depth analysis of all the above aspects to find out what could have led to injury. A mindless ‘lifting’ regimen will hurt the delicate structures beneath the muscle. Reckless form will lead to major injuries. Stop using every single muscle in the body to complete an exercise. Make the target muscle do the maximum amount of work by establishing a strong mind-muscle link. Familiarise yourself with all movements that should be done during warm-ups. Weight training, when correctly used, helps a lot in rehabilitation programmes.”
