Revisiting the Thirukkural

Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam, the literary wing of the Shriram group, organises its annual Statelevel Thirukkural elocution contest for school and college students in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The preliminary rounds will begin on July 18 in Chennai at the Dr. MGR Janaki Arts and Science College for Women. The rounds will also be held in Vellore (July 19), Coimbatore (July 25), Salem (July 26), Tirunelveli (August 1), Madurai (August 2), Puducherry (August 8) and Tiruchi (August 9).

The contests will be held in four groups - Juniors (Classes 6-8), Seniors (Classes 9 and 10), Super-seniors (Classes 11 and 12) and College. Each school can send only two entries form each class under each category. Colleges can send six students. Each contestant can speak for five minutes on any of the topics mentioned below.

Junior - Anthanar Enbore Aravore / Vaaimai Enappaduvathu Yaathenin / Aalvinayum Aandra Aravum; Senior - Thavamaraindhu Allavai Seithal / Tunbathil Tunbang Kedin / Unnarkka Kallai; Super-senior - Arasarul Aerru / Ulliyathu Aeithal Elithu / Marunthenu Vendaavaam Yaakkaikku; College level - Solluthal Vallaar Perin / Thuikka Thuvara Pasiththu or Isaiyum Iniya Sevikku.

The preliminary rounds and the semi-finals will be held the same day. The finals will be held on August 29 in Chennai. Winners in each group will be given Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 5,000 as first, second and third prize. The first prize winner's school / college will be presented with a shield.
