My Five - SAIRA ASLAM
Sting Desert Rose
Desert Rose from the album Brand New Day is unarguably one of the greatest songs of all time. Take the line, ‘I wake in vain... I dream of love as time runs through my hand...’ Superb music. The song gathers pace just as the ‘journey’ starts. A mix of haunting nostalgia, longing and melody come alive. Algerian Raï singer Cheb Mami gives the song a ‘world music’ feel. A real classic! Linkin Park In the End
Linkin Park, in its very first album Hybrid Theory, impresses with In the End. The song gathers tempo slowly yet surely. The lines: ‘I tried so hard/ And got so far/ But in the end/ It doesn’t even matter’, sum up all the emotions — of dejection, rejection, failure...and taking it all in one’s stride. This nu metal song is one of their most popular songs. Chester Bunnington is awesome; and the rap is just too good. Enrique Iglesias Love to See You Cry
This pop song from the album Escape (2001) is an all-time favourite. Enrique with his vulnerable looks, expressive eyes and magical voice casts a spell. Even though the title track became more popular, Love to See You Cry leaves you craving for more. The lines, ‘Are you coming to the moment/ When you know your heart can break / I am inside you/ I am around you/ I just wanna hear you cry’ heighten the tension, the eccentricity associated with the song. Good lyrics, superb music. Teriyaki Boyz Tokyo Drift (Fast and Furious)
It wasn’t the chartbuster two years back for no reason. The ultimate foot-tapping music compels you to wear your dancing shoes. In fact, it is the ideal song to burn the dance floor. The interim music with the tick-tick-tick effect is sure to make listeners go crazy. A very high energy song, it is bound to lift your spirits and bring an adrenaline rush, especially while driving, especially people who like speed. Nelly Furtado Say it Right
Another track with a difference. The music captivates with the sensuous voice of the Canadian singer and also Timbaland. The lines: ‘No, you don’t mean nothing at all to me/ But you got what it takes to set me free/ Oh, you could mean everything to me’... are captivating. No wonder, the song reached number one in more than thirty countries. The best part is you can’t stop humming it after listening to it. Those that almost made it Jay Sean: Ride it Metallica: Nothing Else Matters Justin Timberlake: What Goes Around Comes Around Madonna: Die Another Day Kevin Lyttle: Turn Me On (Saira Aslam is a graduate in Communicative English with Media Studies from New Delhi) [Readers may contribute to MyFive at myfivecolumn@gmail.com.
